History of Freddo Coffee

Like Indonesia, Greece is a country with a long summer season. That's why cold beverages remain the timeless choice, and it applies to the realm of coffee. Freddo coffee was created in the mid-90s and marked the beginning of the development of iced milk coffee frappes. In Greece, people enjoy Freddo iced coffee in both summer and winter. Despite numerous developments in iced milk coffee, for the Greeks, Freddo coffee still reigns supreme!

However, what makes Freddo coffee interesting is its preparation method, involving shaking espresso with ice cubes to create a frothy coffee. Moreover, Freddo coffee can be served and customized according to preferences, such as adding honey or adjusting the desired sugar level. Some even opt to enhance it with vanilla or a splash of alcohol. In terms of appearance, Freddo iced coffee certainly stands out from other iced milk coffees!

Freddo espresso and Freddo cappuccino are essentially made using the same method but with different ingredients. Freddo espresso involves blending a double shot of espresso with ice and sugar, using a mixer to create foam. On the other hand, to make Freddo cappuccino, cold frothy milk is added on top. Whether it's Freddo espresso or cappuccino, both are served in a glass on top of ice cubes.

Tips for Making Coffee Freddo at Home

To create homemade Freddo iced coffee, here are some tips you can try:

  • • Choose high-quality coffee beans. For a richer and textured flavor, opt for coffee beans with a darker roast. Select coffee beans with a full body and a hint of acidity.
  • • Mix the coffee with hot water before combining it with ice. If you have an espresso machine, feel free to use it. Pay attention to the water amount; more water will result in a lighter coffee taste. If you like, you can add sugar at this stage.
  • • If you're planning to make Freddo cappuccino, also prepare your choice of milk. For the best flavor, you can choose full cream milk.

Other Greek Coffees

Another Greek coffee variation besides Freddo coffee is Ibrik coffee. Ibrik coffee uses finely ground coffee beans and is made using a 'briki' or 'ibrik,' a small pot made of brass with a long handle. Typically, Ibrik coffee is prepared either with hot sand or a gas stove.

Apart from Ibrik coffee, there's also Greek iced coffee called Frappe, which is a development from Freddo iced coffee. If you're into iced milk coffee, you probably know this one quite well in Indonesia. Who's aware that frappe is a Greek-origin iced coffee? Yes! Frappe has been around since the 1960s, usually made with instant coffee mixed with milk and sugar.
